Biggest Texas Weekend EVER

I just had the most crazy busy, but ever exciting weekend in Dallas!  It was full of college students flooding in from Austin and Oklahoma. That could only mean one thing….

TexasOU Weekend

For those unfamiliar with this football game, this is seriously one of the biggest college team rivalrys.

University of Texas – Austin vs. Oklahoma University.

The Longhorns vs. the Sooners.

Every year, this game is held in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl, which is the football stadium smack dab in the middle of the Texas State Fair. And every year, thousands of Texas and OU fans come together in Dallas to cheer on their team, eat a bunch of fried food, and experience the atmosphere. Seriously, the crowd was electrifying. Since I never went to a school that was super big on sporting events or football, this was a brand new experience for me. Everyone dressed in their cutest burnt orange or red outfit. College pride was everywhere. Even as a self-proclammed non-sports follower, I had the BEST TIME!! And friendly rivalry was everywhere! Here’s an example:

Yes, this actually happens every year: Texas on one side, Oklahoma on the other….they don’t mix very often.

But even though we didn’t have tickets to the game, my friends and I ventured to see all of the excitement at the State Fair! (Since you have to go through the fair to get to the stadium anyway). Luckily, they had a bunch of TV’s set up for everyone’s viewing pleasure who didn’t have tickets. But unfortunately, Texas wasn’t doing so hot… the score at half time was 36 – 2 Oklahoma leading. By then, even the most dedicated Texas fan had seen enough….But the Texas State Fair was there to keep us occupied! And we all shared a bunch of new delicious fried food!

Here’s the mini food recap!

Deep Fried Twinkie

It was MUCH better than I expected! Tasted almost homemade…haha….almost

Deep Fried Jambalaya

This was named the “Best Taste” award for all foods at the Texas State Fair. But, we all agreed, the onion ring was better than the Jambalaya…not sure what happened there!

Deep Fried Macaroni and Cheese

I think this speaks for itself. One of the best of the day!!

Deep Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Banana

Another winner in my book! More decadent that the typical kids meal, but a great twist on a classic comfort food.

Chicken Fried Cactus Bites

We searched long and hard for these! The food maps weren’t very clear when it came to this dish! Not very pretty, but I’d never had cactus before! Really good and it had a interesting flavor that’s hard to describe! The agave-jalepeno ranch complemented it well!

And the finale of the day:

Fried Bacon Cinnamon Roll

This won “Most Creative” at the fair this year and for good reason! Big chunks of crispy bacon ran throughout the ENTIRE cinnamon roll. Even the middle of it was bacon packed.

Needless to stay… we all left happy and full that day!
