Did everyone have a good holiday? I spent my 4th of July going to the pool with friends and having a delicious dinner! And, of course, having a treat of these fun jello creations!
But how do you make these fun jello cups to have super cool stripes?! Well, I got the technique from a Pinterest find, and then I ran with it to make a fun 4th of July “Adult” treat! Don’t be intimidated! Although these look hard, they really aren’t. It just takes a little planning and patience, but in no time you will have a fun treat for ANY Holiday season!
First to you will need to gather your belongings. You will need:
- 3 oz. package of berry blue jello
- 1 envelope Knox Unflavored gelatin
- 14 oz. can sweetened condensed skim milk
- 2 – 3 oz. packages of sugar free raspberry jello
- Water – boiling and room temp
- Clear alcohol of your choice (optional)
- 50 clear plastic shot glasses (2 oz)
- Muffin Tin
I found the shot glasses at my local restaurant supply store for around $3.50 a pack. If you have a restaurant supply store close by, I recommend going there and checking out what they have. Besides having great prices, it is SO fun to look around that place… I was in kitchen store heaven!
First things first, make your berry blue jello. Make according to package directions for a the virgin variety, but make according to these directions if you want the more alcoholic variety.
Combine 1 package of berry blue jello with 2/3 of a cup of boiling water. Stir to dissolve and let cool down for about 5 minutes. Then add in 1 and 1/3 cup of clear alcohol of your choice (I recommend white rum or vodka for these. The cheaper varieties are better).
Now for the fun part! The slant! Take your muffin tin and clear shot glasses and place them in the muffin tin, tilted like so:
Then fill the cups with 1 Tablespoon of blue jello. Place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until firmly set.
Once they are set, they will look like this:
Now for the fun white stripe. This is a little more complicated to make, but still simple!
In a bowl, combine 1 packet of unflavored gelatin with 1/4 cup cold water. Stir, and allow it to bloom and thicken, about 2 minutes. Next, add 1/4 cup boiling water and 1/3 cup condensed milk. Stir so everything is fully combined and smooth. Then add in 1/2 cup alcohol ( or water). IMPORTANT!
You really need to let this mixture cool to room temperature before pouring on top of the blue layer. If it AT ALL still warm, it will melt the blue layer….with patience you will be rewarded!
Once completely cool, you can pour 2-3 teaspoons of white jello on top of the blue layer. Then put it in the refrigerator to set. This layer sets much faster than the first blue layer, so you will be ready to pour the final layer after only about 1 hour.
Then they look like this:
They are getting pretty! Only the final layer to go!!
In a large bowl, combine two packets of sugar free raspberry jello with 2 cups of boiling water. Stir to dissolve and let cool down for 5-10 minutes. Then add in 2 cups alcohol. And just like the white layer, allow this mixture to completely cool before adding to the cup!!
You will no longer need to tilt the cups in the muffin tin, but it is very helpful when you do add the red jello to keep the cups upright in the muffin tin for less mess! You will add about 3 tablespoons of red jello to each little cup. Then refrigerate until set (about another hour) and serve!
So festive for 4th of July! And you can get different colors of jello to make fun cups of other holidays/festivities!
