Puppy Chow

This morning I walked out of my apartment, ready to go for the day, and I realized I left my keys inside. This has happened twice in the past two days. I just stand outside my apartment door ready to lock it, but I end up just looking silly standing there loaded down with stuff, without keys in hand. I can be forgetful at times, yet somehow I can never forget about dessert. Even when I leave my apartment for a week and have no food in my refrigerator, I always seem to have the exact ingredients needed to make a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies.

I can forget my keys, but never my dessert. At least I have my priorities straight.

Regardless, I believe you always need something a little sweet to end your day with, and I have the perfect dessert snack recipe to tempt you with!

Yes indeed! That powdered sugar coated cereal is in fact Puppy Chow!!!

If you haven’t heard of puppy chow (also referred to by some as “Muddy Buddies”) it is a delicious combination of sweet and salty with a hint of chocolate and peanut butter! The best part? It comes together in about 10 minutes with minimal cleaning! There are various alternatives flavors and types of Puppy Chow all over Pinterest, but I just kept with the classic flavors:

Peanut Butter and Chocolate coated Rice Chex Cereal

But really, puppy chow is SO easy to make! In a microwave safe bowl, combine 1 cup of dark chocolate chips, 1/2 cup peanut butter, and 1/4 cup butter. Microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval until smooth; about 1 – 2 minutes. Then add in 2 teaspoons vanilla extract.

In a large two gallon plastic bag (it needs to be really big!) pour in 9 cups of chex cereal and pour the melted chocolate/peanut butter mixture on top.
Close the bag up and shake evenly coat the cereal.
Once coated, add in the powdered sugar and shake the bag again.

Pour into bowl to serve! Keeps in an airtight bag for 3 – 4 days.

That’s it!! It only takes 10 minutes from start to finish and you have a delicious sweet snack concoction to take with you to a weeknight get together! I had a bootcamp get together last week and I brought the puppy chow and some spicy buffalo wing popcorn to have some salty snack to balance out the sweet!

And just a reminder, even though it’s called “puppy chow” it’s not meant for dogs. Human consumption only!!
