Thirsty Thursday

Happy Thirsty Thursday! I hope you all are not forgetting to hydrate during these hot summer months! Since this summer is turning out to have some unusually hot weather patterns, hydration and drinking water is super important. No one wants to be dehydrated (it’s not fun). But I know, sometimes plain water is just, well…. boring! So this is my Nutrition Tip of the Day!

Make some fun flavored water!

Flavored water is MUCH more exciting than regular water, and a different taste will help you to drink more. In your favorite pitcher, get some ice, slice up your favorite fruit, and pour fresh cold water on top of it! That way, you have a whole batch of delicious water to enjoy throughout the day! As you can see, I used oranges for this batch of flavored water, but you can really use anything you like. Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries (aka the berry family); lemons, limes, or a mixture of both; oranges, pears, peaches, pineapple, you name it! If it sounds good to you, it will probably be delicious!

And since it’s almost the weekend, I can’t forget about healthy cocktails! I know, the term “healthy cocktails” is somewhat of a contradiction, but we all like to relax and unwind with a drink in hand occasionally. The two cocktails Marshall and I made last night were made with two different types of Absolut vodka: Raspberry and Pear.

Nothing’s better than a cocktail on the lake! But mixers are some of the worst culprits when it comes to excess calories. Alcohol alone already packs a calorie punch (~100 calories for 1.5 oz), and depending on the mixers you add, it can come out to over 300-400 calories per drink!! Not exactly healthy. So whenever I have a drink, I always use zero calorie (or very low calorie) mixers when possible. And if you are looking for a more flavorful drinks, use some flavored vodka!

Raspberry Soda

To make this pretty drink, take an old fashioned glass (6-10 oz) use 1.5 oz of Raspberry vodka, 4 oz club soda, a splash of pomegranate juice (for color), and a raspberry garnish. Stir to combine and enjoy!

Pear Soda

This drink is basically the same as the raspberry soda, except use 1.5 oz Absolute pear vodka instead of raspberry (Absolut Pear is so delicious, you could easily  get into trouble with this drink, so please consume responsibly). But take your pear vodka, 4 oz of club soda, and a fruit for garnish and you have yourself another refreshing drink for summer!

In other news, I practiced staying hydrated today with a nice 2 mile run! It was nice to get outside and stretch my legs, even though its a million times more humid here than in Texas. Extreme heat is much easier to deal with. But don’t forget to drink lots of (flavored) water today! Even more if you get outside and sweat!

Happy Drinking! 🙂
